Ever think about the coping mechanisms Al Shabaab militants develop to cope with the trauma they experience during attacks, raids and killings? The mind and body of human beings are built to develop some coping mechanism when we encounter difficult situations and experiences. This coping mechanism is no different from when we are exposed to traumatic events like war, sickness and displacement.

Drug use in the Al Shabaab has been reported to be on the rise in the last year alone. Militants have been forced to commit atrocities on people during attacks and raids which have led to the death of thousands of people in Somalia and the neighboring nations. These atrocities range from beheadings, raping, mass killings and torture.

Their activities have caught up with them and have seen Al Shabaab militants begin peddling and using drugs to help cope with their trauma. These drugs have been made available to the militants before and after carrying out attacks. Most of the drugs are served in the food and water given to militants in small portions before they get addicted. Getting addicted to these drugs makes the militants qualify to commit more gruesome atrocities like raping and killing children born within their camps and those kidnapped in villages. At this level of addiction, a concoction is injected directly in their system which helps them cope and keep up with their actions.

Like every other addiction, the Al Shabaab militants use drugs to cope with the violence and inhumane atrocities they commit. These drugs have been made readily available by their leaders to take away guilt or temptations to leave the group. In turn, their life span is short and creates a need for new recruits. It is high time that people know that joining the Al Shabaab to address grievances only leads to addiction then eventual painful death.
